Carlos Alcaraz, the tennis world's top player, is "ready to change tennis" according to Dominic Thiem who was amazed by his US Open conquest.
The Spaniard has had a standout 2022 season thus far, taking home the US Open title last month to win his maiden Grand Slam along with several trophies and numerous finals. He made history at Flushing Meadows becoming the youngest player to become world number beating out all the legendary players that came before him.
Speaking to AS, Thiem noted the significance of that: “He already has a unique career. He is the youngest number one in history and winner of the US Open as a teenager, exceptional.”
“He is about to change tennis, because in New York, no matter how
long the matches went on, he was there the whole time, playing offence,
going to the net and contesting every point without fear. And I think this is new. Nobody did that before. We must catch up.” - said Thiem who triumphed in New York two years before Alcaraz.
It's a continuation of comments made earlier where he admitted that the new generation are making the big three look cautious:
"They play very fast and have elevated this sport to a new level. Compared to them, the Big Three were almost defensive or cautious.”
