In the first round of the 2022 Gijon Open, Dominic Thiem played probably the best tennis since he returned from an injury, and he didn't hide that he was happy about it afterward.
The 2020 US Open champion wasn't really successful on the ATP level this year so far. He played a few tournaments but managed to win more than two matches only once.
Now, Thiem started his 2022 Gijon Open campaign with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Joao Sousa in 62 minutes, and after the match, he showed that he was really happy about his performance.
"It was a great match. For the first time in ages, I had the feeling that the ratio between unforced errors and making the right pace, playing really aggressively, was right."
"Especially with the forehand, it was really good for basically the first time [since my injury], so I'm very happy about it."
For Thiem, it was not only about his shots and his fitness, but also his mentality, which proved to be on the level he desires it to be in the match against Sousa.
"The way is right, the direction is right, also the way of focus and how I maintain it from the first to the last point was good and I'll try to keep going that way."
Speaking about his next match against the winner of the clash between Albert Ramos and Marcos Giron and also his goals for the remainder of this season, the 29-year-old Austrian admitted that he would want to finish the season in the Top 100.
"I'll try to go on court the same way like today as it was very, very good. It helps that I have a big goal in mind, to finish the year in the Top 100, which would be amazing."
"I need good matches, I need victories, I still need quite a lot of points. So yeah, I hope I can continue that way on Wednesday, and look forward to it."
