Denis Shapovalov wasn't really successful in singles matches in Malaga, but that changed in the final tie against Australia.

The Canadian lost to Jan-Lennard Struff and Lorenzo Sonego in singles matches at the 2022 Davis Cup Finals, but mostly thanks to his teammates Felix Auger-Aliassime and Vasek Pospisil, Canada made it to the final in which they are facing Australia that is led by former world no. 1 Lleyton Hewitt.

In the opening match, the 23-years-old Canadian took on world no. 95, Thanasi Kokkinakis. The Australian had a very slow start to the match as he got broken twice in the first four games and quickly found himself 0-4 down.

He couldn't then fight back despite his best efforts and lost the first set 2-6. In the second set, Kokkinakis got broken again and despite having three break points to break immediately back, he couldn't do it.

He then lost one more service game and despite breaking back, he was still trailing by one brake and after an hour and 31 minutes Shapovalov won 6-2, 6-4 to give Canada 1-0 lead over Australia. In the second singles match, Felix Auger-Aliassime will play against Alex de Minaur.
