Rune Hits Back At 'Super Strange' Becker Over Mouratoglou Coaching Commitment

by Nurein Ahmed

Holger Rune and his former coach, Boris Becker, have engaged in an online spat that began after the German great publicly questioned Patrick Mouratoglou's coaching commitment.

Rune and Becker were an item in the last quarter of the 2023 season. After a run of one win in 11 matches, the Dane hired the former World No. 1 to serve as interim coach for the remainder of the season, replacing Mouratoglou and his childhood coach Lars Christensen.

Becker duly obliged and succeeded in that role, helping Rune finish the year on a positive note by qualifying for the ATP Finals in Turin for the first time. During the off-season, the pair agreed to carry their alliance into the new season.

The 21-year-old credited the six-time Grand Slam champion with turning his fortunes around. With Rune's reputation as one of the fast-rising new stars on Tour and Becker's experience at the top level, it certainly looked like a match made in heaven.

But surprisingly, their partnership barely lasted more than a month in 2024 because of scheduling challenges, and Becker stepped down from coaching Rune. According to tennis pundits, there was more to their shock split than meets the eye.

Rune would reunite with Mouratoglou for a second stint. However, they have not been seen together on the practice courts at Wimbledon, which tickled Becker's curiosity.

"Quick question: I see @pmouratoglou in London but NOT with @holgerrune2003 at @Wimbledon …they are still working together?!?"

Rune wasted no time to settle the score and clapped back at his former coach. He affirmed that he was still working with the Frenchman and was amused by Becker's questioning when he only needed to text him so that he could clear the air.

"Super strange you don’t ask me this question directly as we text together about other stuff 😂 The answer to your question is yes we work together. Sharing the tournaments between us as planned."
