Patrick Mouratoglou is a French professional tennis coach who has worked with ATP and WTA professionals since 1996.
Date of Birth: | 8 June 1970 |
Birthplace: | Neuilly-sur-Seine, France |
Patrick Mouratoglou was born in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France on June 8, 1970. He played tennis from age four and had aspirations to turn professional. However, his parents felt it was an unstable career path and Mouratoglou was unable to pursue his dream.
Instead, Mouratoglou focussed on tennis coaching and setting up the Mouratoglou Tennis Academy in 1996. He aimed to provide young players the chance to become professional players. It wasn’t until 1999 when Mouratoglou started coaching professional tennis players and one of his first clients was Marcos Baghdatis.
Mouratoglou trained Baghdatis to become a Top 10 player who won the 2003 boys' Australian Open and reached the 2006 Australian Open final. After achieving success with Baghdatis, Mouratoglou coached Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova between 2007 and 2009. He helped the Russian player move from 300th in the WTA Rankings up to the Top 30.
In 2009, Mouratoglou worked with Aravane Rezaï and Yanina Wickmayer and helped both players progress into the WTA’s top 20. The French coach also spent time training a teenage Laura Robson and Jeremy Chardy until 2012. Mouratoglou started coaching Serena Willimas late in 2012 - a move that started a decade-long collaboration.
The partnership began after Williams crashed out of the Roland Garros first round in 2012. Williams achieved near dominance in Grand Slams and elite events under Mouratoglou’s guidance. The American player won 10 Grand Slam titles, an Olympic gold medal, and three consecutive end-of-year championships. However, the long-standing relationship ended when Williams retired in 2022.
Whilst coaching Williams, Mouratoglou also worked with Coco Gauff and Stefanos Tsitsipas, who visited the Frenchman’s academy as young players. Since 2022, Mouratoglou has worked with Simona Halep and Holger Rune. He initially started coaching Halep in mid-2022 before the Romanian player was suspended for doping.
Subsequently, Mouratoglou moved on to coach Rune. The Danish player had initial success under Mouratoglou, winning the 2022 Paris Masters. However, the duo have had an on-off relationship of splits and reuniting between 2023 and 2024.
