Goran Ivanisevic provided more honest and blunt comments in a recent interview when speaking about what Patrick Mouratoglou thought of the remarks the Croatian made about Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Ivanisevic's tenure as Tsitsipas's coach ended a few days ago after less than two months. He began working with him after the 2025 French Open, and the Greek fans hoped that having a former Grand Slam champion could bring newfound success.
Instead, Tsitsipas only played three matches before parting ways with Ivanisevic. The last of those ended in a retirement at the 2025 Wimbledon Championships after a chronic back injury started troubling him again.
Many were left stunned when Ivanisevic slammed Tsitsipas in an interview published a few days later. He called out the two-time Grand Slam runner-up's fitness and for talking about wanting to reach the top without backing it up.
Mouratoglou was among the most high-profile figures to express disapproval with how Ivanisevic spoke about Tsitsipas. The Frenchman said it was undoubtedly painful for the 26-year-old to read that, and such actions make building trust with a player.
Tsitsipas' decision to split from Ivanisevic and his comments at an event about not wanting to work with dictators, an obvious dig at the 2001 Wimbledon champion, might mean Mouratoglou feels vindicated with his remarks.
However, Ivanisevic's disdain for Mouratoglou was apparent in his response in an interview with Anna Chakvetadze. The 53-year-old said it would be best not to give his true feelings about Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams's former coach.
"If he has a problem with me, he should call me. I don't go around and talk about what I think about him. I'd better not say what I think about him."
Although he enjoyed significant success during almost a decade of coaching Williams, Mouratoglou is also a controversial figure. He and his team notably provided the contaminated collagen that led to Simona Halep's doping nightmare.
Some believe that Mouratoglou should have faced consequences for his role in that high-profile incident and that his period with Osaka and three spells with Holger Rune since then are insulting to the sport's integrity.
Ivanisevic's dislike of Mouratoglou might only be caused by his criticism of what the Croatian said about Tsitsipas. He believes his words were overblown and revealed that he said the same things to the Greek privately.
Defenders of Mouratoglou could argue that what he did was not much different from Ivanisevic's blunt words about Tsitsipas. Mouratoglou said things Ivanisevic did not like without telling him beforehand, in the same way Tsitsipas was blindsided by his then-coach making his feelings about him public.
Ivanisevic's annoyance with Mouratoglou's words means he might have taken a little joy in Osaka splitting with the Frenchman after less than a year. He has not enjoyed a long-term successful partnership with a player since parting ways with Williams over three years ago.
Whether Mouratoglou coaches another professional player remains to be seen. It seemed like his time as a top coach might be over until the Osaka partnership, so nothing can be definitively ruled out.
