Holger Rune's attempts to flirt with former WTA world No. 9 did not end well, as the WTA star herself revealed.
Rune is currently focusing on finding consistent form after a challenging 2025 season due to injury and form issues. Winning the 2025 Barcelona in April was the notable exception to those difficulties.
The Dane worked with Andre Agassi before the 2025 Citi Open, although he ultimately did not play at the tournament because of an injury setback. Rune has not ruled out the possibility of collaborating with Agassi more in the future.
If that occurs, he will hope that the attempt at success is less catastrophic than his misguided efforts to woo Veronika Kudermetova. Unfortunately for the 22-year-old, he did not do enough research before doing that.
Kudermetova has been married to her coach, Sergei Demekhine, since 2017, and they have dated since 2015. As one of the few married players on the WTA Tour, she is one of the last players anyone should try to date.
On a podcast with compatriot and former player Elena Vesnina, Kudermetova revealed she received a message from the former ATP world No. 4, but that immediately ended when she revealed her husband's existence.
"Rune recently texted me. I told him, ‘Boy, I’m probably too old for you. If you looked at my Instagram, you’d see I have a husband.’ He replied, ‘Oh, sorry.’ After that, he stopped saying hi to me."
Rune's seeming ignorance about Kudermetova's husband is quite surprising since the story of how that relationship was formed is well-known. Demekhine has coached her since 2012.
Their romantic relationship began a decade ago despite Demekhine being her coach, Kudermetova being just 18 at the time, and Demekhine being 13 years older. Those factors have not stopped them from being happy together.
Kudermetova's marriage prevented the possibility of two more tennis players dating. It happens quite often, although they have a mixed track record of success. Some are long-lasting, while others have swiftly failed.
Alex de Minaur and Katie Boulter have an active relationship that has worked. After a few years of dating, they are engaged, and they will play in the 2025 US Open mixed doubles together, which should be great viewing.
The most high-profile married couple in tennis history is Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf. With 30 Grand Slam singles titles between them, they are the most statistically successful players to have ever come together.
However, there have also been a number of failed relationships. Paula Badosa and Stefanos Tsitsipas's time together is widely reported to be over, and they removed themselves from the US Open mixed doubles.
Jannik Sinner and Anna Kalinskaya also could not make their relationship work for the long term. It is unknown when exactly they split, but both confirmed earlier this year that they were currently single.
Anastasia Potapova and Alexander Shevchenko swiftly married after a brief time together, but they divorced after less than a year. Potapova subsequently spoke about the problems that led to the end of their marriage.
