Grigor Dimitrov will not compete at the 2025 US Open, as he is still battling an injury that forced him to retire from this year's Wimbledon Championships.
Dimitrov was on the longest active streak of consecutive appearances at Grand Slam tournaments. From the 2011 Australian Open, where he lost in the second round to Stan Wawrinka, to this year's Wimbledon, the Bulgarian player competed in 58 consecutive majors.
His last five appearances at Grand Slams ended in massive heartbreaks. It all started at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships, where Dimitrov was forced to retire from his fourth-round match against Daniil Medvedev down 3-5 in the first set.
At the 2024 US Open, the Bulgarian player reached the quarter-finals, retiring in the fourth set (1-2 down) against Frances Tiafoe. This season didn't start well for him either, as Dimitrov retired already in his first-round match at the Australian Open against lucky loser Francesco Passaro.
At the 2025 French Open, Dimitrov completed a Grand Slam of retirements, retiring from his fourth consecutive major. He was leading qualifier Ethan Quinn 6-2, 6-3, but injured himself and retired after the third set (2-1 up).
However, the most heartbreaking retirement came at the 2025 Wimbledon Championships. The whole tennis world was watching his fourth-round match against the ATP World No. 1 player, Jannik Sinner.
Dimitrov stunningly won the first two sets, leading 6-3, 7-5, but he terribly injured himself in the middle of the third set, having to retire despite leading by two sets to zero.
Since then, the 34-year-old has worked hard to return to the tennis courts, but he was already forced to retire from the Canadian Open in Toronto as well as the Cincinnati Open.
After opting to miss those two ATP Masters 1000 events, Dimitrov's only hope was to recover before the start of the US Open. The last major of the season begins on August 24th, but the Bulgarian player won't be fit until then.
His manager, Georgi Stoimenov, spoke to Tennis Kafe, reporting that Dimitrov won't compete at this year's US Open. Instead, the current ATP World No. 20 player will attempt to make a comeback during the Asian Swing.
At the moment, the entry lists for tournaments in Asia are not available, but Dimitrov will have plenty of options. The first events start already on September 17th in Chengdu and Hangzhou. Both are ATP 250 tournaments.
After that, the Bulgarian will have an option to choose either an ATP 500 tournament in Tokyo, starting on September 24th, or an event of the same category in Beijing, which starts a day later. Following those tournaments, the Asian Swing will conclude with the Shanghai Masters.
Dimitrov's withdrawals from all the upcoming tournaments also mean that he will fall in the ATP Rankings. Currently ranked 20th in the world, he won't be ranked higher than 24th when he comes back, and could even fall out of the Top 30.
