Bianca Andreescu won't be able to continue competing at the 2025 Canadian Open in Montreal. She withdrew ahead of her second-round match.
Andreescu is a home-crowd favorite anytime she plays on her home court in Canada. In 2019, she won the WTA 1000 event in Toronto, which came shortly ahead of her US Open win.
Since then, the Canadian's career has been marked by many injuries and unlucky moments, and she experienced another such moment in Montreal this year. After winning three matches at the Hopman Cup, Andreescu wanted to carry over her form to her home event in Montreal, and partially, she managed to do that.
In her first-round match, the 25-year-old took on former Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova. Andresscu was up 6-3, 5-4, and had an advantage on her serve, which meant a match point. Unfortunately, she misstepped during the rally, rolling her ankle.
The match had to be stopped for a while, but Andreescu was eventually able to continue. She was even able to win the match 6-3, 6-4, but after the match, she wasn't sure whether she would be able to continue competing at the event.
"It's definitely unfortunate what happened. So, I just have to wait to see tomorrow morning basically what the prognosis is and then go from there. I'm hoping it's nothing serious."
Andreescu hoped it wouldn't be anything serious, but that wasn't the case. She withdrew from the tournament shortly ahead of her second-round match against Mirra Andreeva, who spoke nicely about her before.
The Canadian player even held a press conference, explaining her withdrawal. She stated that she had torn ligaments in her ankle and had to withdraw as a precaution.
"Sadly, I have to pull out. I have to take the precautions of what's going on. I have a little bit of torn ligaments in my ankle. Sadly, I won't be able to play the tournament."
"It definitely sucks because this has happened before. Honestly, I don't have much to say. It's really frustrating for me and my team, obviously. We're doing the best that we can to prevent these things, but it's tough."
Andreescu was also asked about her upcoming schedule. After withdrawing from the tournament in Montreal, her participation at the WTA 1000 event in Cincinnati and the US Open is obviously also in doubt.
Despite the scare, the Canadian seems to be positive about her possible comeback already in Cincinnati. After that, she would want to compete at the Grand Slam that she had previously won.
"Taking it day by day, but obviously the ligaments are a little bit torn, so that takes time. So it's kind of a day-to-day thing. I'm hoping to be ready for Cincinnati, but we don't know. Can't say."
Andreescu also talked about her emotions. She has been one of the most injured players in recent years, and she has admitted that it's very challenging to stay positive.
"I mean, all I could think about is, honestly, like why, again? I think I even screamed out, 'Why does this keep happening to me?' Just a bunch of emotions. I was super overwhelmed, obviously playing in front of a home crowd. Winning the match, right? It was match point for me, and it was just crazy."
"It was crazy. I started laughing at one point because, honestly, at this point it's laughable. For me, it's just crazy. It's crazy. I'm trying to stay positive, but it's getting really tough. It's getting really tough."
