A clip posted on social media gave fans a first glimpse into
Novak Djokovic's training for the
US Open.
Djokovic has not appeared at any tournaments since the 2025 Wimbledon Championships. The seven-time champion at SW19 reached the semifinal before being swiftly defeated by Jannik Sinner.
Beating the current
ATP world No. 1 would have been challenging under any circumstances, but Djokovic was also physically hampered, stopping the match from being as competitive as it could have been.
Despite that setback and Djokovic's admission that he endures more physical struggles in the latter stages of Grand Slams than previously,
he wants to keep playing and try to compete with Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.
The 2025 US Open will be the latest test of whether doing that is realistic. At 38 years old, winning a fifth title at Flushing Meadows would arguably be the best achievement of his illustrious career.
Rather than staying at home in Serbia to prepare, Djokovic is in Portonovi, a resort in Montenegro. It is a luxurious setting that affords the 24-time Grand Slam champion enough privacy to focus on preparing without being disturbed.
Nonetheless, Djokovic was still videoed training at the resort. The short clip below shows him hitting two forehands before the person at the other end of the court hits the ball long, causing Djokovic to restart the rally.
Unsurprisingly, Djokovic is training on a hard court in preparation for the US Open. He and his team might have chosen Portonovi after doing research on finding hard courts that most closely resemble those used at the final Grand Slam of the season.
Djokovic chose to train in Portonovi instead of appearing at the ongoing 2025 Cincinnati Open. He won the title in his last appearance at that event, triumphing in a memorable final against Carlos Alcaraz in a deciding set tiebreak.
The tennis legend's withdrawal from the 2025 Canadian Open, which occurred two weeks after Wimbledon ended, was expected. Whether he would play in Cincinnati was more uncertain until he removed himself from the tournament's entry list.
Djokovic will play in the US Open's new mixed doubles format
Djokovic's first appearance since Wimbledon will be in the US Open's revamped mixed doubles, scheduled during fan week instead of at the same time as the men's and women's singles and doubles, as has traditionally been the case.
Olga Danilovic was confirmed as Djokovic's partner several weeks ago. They have played together at the United Cup, but playing alongside her idol at the US Open will undoubtedly be a special moment for Danilovic.
Many other fascinating teams have been announced. Carlos Alcaraz and Emma Raducanu's pairing generated attention because the Spaniard revealed he asked for her personally, sparking dating rumors.
Raducanu insists they are just friends.
Jannik Sinner and Emma Navarro, Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud, Venus Williams and Reilly Opelka, and Ben Shelton and Taylor Townsend are among the other confirmed teams for the US Open mixed doubles.
