Jannik Sinner secured his spot at the 2025 ATP Finals in Turin already in August despite having played only five events this year.
Sinner has been the best player on the ATP Tour in the past 12 months. Since the start of the 2024 season, he has already managed to win four Grand Slam titles. Last year, the Italian player qualified for the ATP Finals in Turin, even winning the tournament, and he will compete this year again.
Sinner's 2025 season has been marked by his three-month suspension, which is the reason why he has completed only five tournaments by the start of August. That's much, much less than the rest of his rivals.
For example, Carlos Alcaraz, who also already has a spot in Turin secured, has played 11 tournaments, while Alexander Zverev has already played in 15 events, yet he still doesn't have a spot at the ATP Finals secured, even though he's currently in a pole position to make it to Turin.
Sinner started the season by winning the Australian Open, which earned him 2,000 ranking points. He then reached the finals in Rome and at the Roland Garros, losing both to Carlos Alcaraz. Those two events combined increased the 23-year-old's total by 1,950 points.
The four-time Grand Slam champion then recorded his worst result of the season, losing already in his second match in Halle. That result meant an additional 50 points for Sinner, who earned another 2,000 points for winning Wimbledon.
In total, he has earned 6,000 points before the start of this year's Cincinnati Open, which was enough for him to secure his participation at the 2025 ATP Finals, which will run from November 9th until 16th in Turin's Inalpi Arena.
It will be his third consecutive participation at the tournament, at which he has an impressive 10-2 record, with only Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev being able to beat him.

Others are trying to secure their spot at the ATP Finals

With Alcaraz and Sinner already having their spots at the ATP Finals secured, the rest of the field will now compete for the remaining six spots. Novak Djokovic is among those players, but it's questionable whether he would compete in Turin, even if he qualified.
Currently, Alexander Zverev leads the field as the third player in the 2025 ATP Race. He has a 220-point lead over Ben Shelton, who is ahead of Djokovic. Behind them, Taylor Fritz, Jack Draper, Alex de Minaur, and Lorenzo Musetti occupy spots six to nine, and they are separated only by 345 points.
Behind Musetti, there is a 435-point gap, and if Djokovic were to miss the tournament, as he did last year, it's very probable that the other eight men in the Top 9 would make up for this year's field at the ATP Finals. Of course, unless someone from behind records a great result in Cincinnati or at the US Open.

Sinner starts Cincinnati Open title charge with his quickest career win

Sinner kicked off his 2025 Cincinnati Open campaign with an impressive 6-1, 6-1 win over Daniel Elahi Galan in only 59 minutes. It was the quickest Tour-level win he has ever recorded.
After the match, the ATP World No. 1 player was pleased about how he played. His next opponent will be Gabriel Diallo, and the Italian knows that serving well against the Canadian might be crucial. He managed to do that against Galan.
"Matches are always more different than practice sessions, so I didn’t know exactly what to expect today. But I’m very happy. It’s not easy to play here, the ball is flying. You have to serve very precisely, but also with good pace if you want to go far in the tournament."
"Today I felt like I was serving in the spots I wanted. There is still room to improve, but as a first-round match, I couldn’t have wished [for more]. I am very happy to be back here, the crowd is amazing."
