Ben Shelton's heroics in the ATP final of the Canadian Open included him needing to mentally reset after the Toronto crowd celebrated Victoria Mboko's success in the WTA final in Montreal.
Shelton played Karen Khachanov for his first Masters 1000 title. The 22-year-old looked in trouble after losing the opening set despite being 5-3 up in the tiebreak. He collapsed in the final four points to leave himself with a mountain to climb.
His effort to recover from that position was impressive. Shelton won a match decided by very fine margins 6-7, 6-4, 7-6. There were only three breaks of serve, and the American's more clinical play in the deciding streak proved decisive.
Both men produced high-quality, attacking tennis throughout the encounter. Their efforts were even more impressive after the Toronto crowd's jubilant reaction to the events in Montreal disrupted them.

Shelton and Khachanov disrupted by crowd's response to Mboko's success

Although Shelton's title run in Toronto was superb, 18-year-old Mboko's triumph on home soil in Montreal was even more memorable. In the final, she overcame her childhood idol Naomi Osaka 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Mboko also defeated Coco Gauff, who does not think the Canadian should be compared to her, and Elena Rybakina. Her success captured the imagination of tennis fans worldwide, but especially Canadians.
Mboko and Osaka's match began before Shelton and Khachanov's. When the teenager's maiden WTA title was confirmed, the crowd in Toronto, who were following on their phones, erupted in celebration.
Understandably, Shelton, focused on one of the most significant matches of his career, did not understand why the crowd had suddenly started cheering. Shelton was especially perplexed by their sudden reaction.
Umpire Fergus Murphy tried to shout an explanation to Shelton, but the Irish official could not be heard over the rapturous noise. The No. 4 seed had to walk over to get an explanation from Murphy.
Shelton was then filled in about what caused the crowd's elation. It is not entirely clear whether Khachanov also did not understand the fans celebrating, or if he did know and just waited for Shelton to ask the umpire about it.
The Toronto fans' reaction shows what Mboko's success means to the country. She is just the fifth wild card since 1990 to win a WTA 1000 event and the first since compatriot Bianca Andreescu won the 2019 Indian Wells Open as a wild card.

Shelton and Mboko show that tennis's future is bright

The ATP and WTA Tours are in a great place. 22-year-old Shelton and 18-year-old Mboko will be among several players vying for the sport's most significant prizes for the next decade or more.
23-year-old Jannik Sinner and 22-year-old Carlos Alcaraz have established themselves as the best men's players during the last few years, but Shelton, Holger Rune, Lorenzo Musetti, and Jack Draper are all young players looking to compete with them.
On the WTA side, French Open champion Gauff, Wimbledon winner Iga Swiatek, world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, and 18-year-old Mirra Andreeva are among those ready to lead women's tennis into a glorious era.
