The 2025 US Open could lose one of its star attractions after Mirra Andreeva's participation was thrown into doubt.
Andreeva lost to McCartney Kessler in the round of 32 at the 2025 Canadian Open in Montreal. She received a walkover from Bianca Andreescu in the opening round, meaning she has not won a completed match since the 2025 Wimbledon Championships.
The teenager probably needed some time off after a tough 6-7, 6-7 defeat to Belinda Bencic in the quarterfinals at SW19. Andreeva's superb overall season so far includes claiming two WTA 1000 titles at the Dubai Championships and the Indian Wells Open.
Those WTA 1000 crowns coming on hard courts strengthened the case for Andreeva being among the favorites to win the US Open, despite the 18-year-old still waiting to make her maiden Grand Slam final appearance.

Mirra Andreeva withdraws from the Cincinnati Open

Andreeva removed herself from the Cincinnati Open entry list because of a left ankle injury she sustained at the Canadian Open, which might have influenced her below-par performance against Kessler.
Although recovery times can differ significantly depending on the player, ankle injuries often lead to a lengthy period on the sidelines. Some important figures in tennis history have had severe ankle problems.
Her next scheduled appearance is during the US Open Mixed Doubles alongside Daniil Medvedev. After the organizers elected to change the format, it will occur during the tournament's fan week.
Although Andreeva would like to be fit for what promises to be a fun new mixed doubles format, her primary focus is undoubtedly being ready for the US Open main draw, which begins on Sunday, August 24th.
Andreeva still has over two weeks to fully heal her ankle before the season's final Grand Slam. That is a decent window to work hard and do everything possible to be fit for the tournament in New York.
Losing someone with Andreeva's status is a significant blow for the Cincinnati Open. Andreeva, Coco Gauff, and Victoria Mboko, who had an injury scare ahead of the Canadian Open, are a generation of young players leading the WTA Tour.

The Cincinnati Open WTA draw remains strong

Andreeva's withdrawals mean the Cincinnati Open tournament organizers will be even more relieved to have Aryna Sabalenka in the draw. The world No. 1 did not compete at the Canadian Open, citing fatigue.
Any fair-minded person would understand that decision because Sabalenka has reached seven finals so far in 2025. This year's Canadian and Cincinnati Opens are also 12 days long, extended from the previous 7.
That did not stop one former ATP player from ridiculing Sabalenka for withdrawing due to fatigue. That led to a fiery reaction from Serena Williams's former coach, Rennae Stubbs, who thinks the criticism was because of sexism.
Gauff, Iga Swiatek, Jessica Pegula, Madison Keys, Jessica Pegula, and Amanda Anisimova are among the other players in the Cincinnati Open draw. Fans should be treated to much terrific tennis from most of the best women's players in the world.
