Rafael Nadal will make his return in Cincinnati and the Spaniard can knock off Daniil Medvedev from the number one spot in the rankings.

To make it happen Nadal needs a couple of things to happen in a certain way. First of all, Nadal needs a deep run, one that will finish with him lifting the Western & Southern Open trophy. The 2nd part of the equation is for Daniil Medvedev not to have a deep run.

Nadal needs the Russian to crash out before the quarterfinals in order to secure the number one ranking. It's going to be very interesting to see how Nadal plays in Cincinnati because he had some success over the year. The last time he played before this year was way back in 2017 when he lost to Nick Kyrgios.

Nadal has a pretty decent draw with the highest ranked player in his section being Felix Auger-Alaissime whom Nadal can certainly beat. His first opponent could be Borna Coric in round two but the Croatian hasn't played well in a while.

Medvedev has a tougher draw as the Russian might have to face Maxime Cressy in round two. That's a tricky matchup and things don't get easier after that with Grigor Dimitrov a possible opponent as well. Andrey Rublev and Nick Kyrgios are also in his part of the draw.
