When Nick Kyrgios won in the second round of the 2022 US Open he was given yet another punishment for his behavior in the match.
The 27-year-old Australian appeared to be in charge of the match against Benjamin Bonzi, but he grew frustrated with his box at one point and spit in their direction after losing one of the games.
Nick Kyrgios was overheard shouting to his box and saying: "Go home if you don't wanna fuck*ng support me bro."
Kyrgios received a warning for unsportsmanlike conduct right away, and he was also assessed a $7,500 fine for his behavior after the game. The 2022 Wimbledon finalist discussed the strain he is under after the match but the Australian tennis legend, Todd Woodbridge had different opinion about what happened on the court.
"At some point the people who are sitting in his players box need to take some action," Woodbridge said on the Channel 9 broadcast. "That action should probably be standing up and walking out. They've got nothing to do with what goes on on the court. That is up to Nick."
"Why does he (Kyrgios) want his player's box to tell him what to do when he's coach-less? I mean, goodness me," Woodbridge said. "The amount of energy he expends unnecessarily, it wears him out. He is so much better when he doesn't do that ... he's angry with himself."
