Nick Kyrgios complained about the smell of marijuana during his second-round match at the 2022 US Open.
Kyrgios has been showing how good a player he is in recent weeks. He continued in that trend also at the US Open. After beating his friend Thanasi Kokkinakis in the first round, the Australian player overcame Benjamin Bonzi in the second round.
But it wasn't without issues. The 2022 Wimbledon finalist need four sets to overcome the Frenchman. He lost the third set, but ultimately won the match 7-6(3), 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
However, Kyrgios' matches are often accompanied by unwanted discussions or on-court behavior that isn't supported by many fans. Although Kyrgios got rid of any unwanted talk or acts towards the opponent or crowd in his match against Bonzi, there was still one contentious moment.
After one of the rallies, the 27-year-old Australian spit on the court, looking someone directly in the eyes. It's not clear if he spits in the direction of his opponent or some fans, but the behavior was certainly not welcomed by the fans.
The match also featured an interesting moment when the 2022 Wimbledon finalist smelled marijuana at the stadium. He complained to the umpire that he could see smoke and smelled marijuana, which was not good for him as he has asthma.
"I smell marijuana. There was smoke. Obviously I'm not going to complete about food smell. Obviously when athletes are running side-to-side and they already have asthma, it's not ideal."
The umpire asked fans not to smoke in the stands after Kyrgios' complaints, and the match could continue. After his win, the Australian can already focus on his third-round match.
His next opponent in New York will be home player J.J. Wolf who beat Roberto Bautista Agut and Alejandro Tabilo to reach the third round.
