Matteo Berrettini was forced to withdraw from yet another tournament. He will miss the 2025
US Open.
Berrettini had the best season of his career in 2021, and he was able to follow up on some of those results also in 2022. In recent years, however, he has struggled with injuries, barely being on the tennis court.
In the past two years, the Italian player has missed a total of four Grand Slam tournaments, which is the half of all majors held. He first missed the Australian Open and Roland Garros in 2024, before reaching the second rounds of Wimbledon and the US Open.
This year, Berrettini reached the second round at the Australian Open, missed the French Open for the fourth consecutive year, and exited Wimbledon in the first round. The US Open will mark his fourth major absence in the past 24 months.
The 29-year-old hasn't played a lot this season either. In the past few months, he retired from two tournaments. First, he retired from the Madrid Open and then the Italian Open in Rome, before withdrawing from Roland Garros. His only grass-court tournament was Wimbledon, where he lost to Kamil Majchrzak.
Since then, Berrettini has withdrawn from numerous events.
He withdrew from the Kitzbuhel Open, where he was the defending champion. The Italian player also announced he would miss the Canadian Open and the Cincinnati Open, saying he wanted to get healthy for the US Open.
It seems, however, that he didn't manage to recover in time for the last Grand Slam tournament of the year, which will run from August 24th until September 7th. Berrettini's name was removed from the entry list more than a week ahead of the 2025 US Open.
Berrettini's frequent withdrawals cause his fall down the rankings
Since Berrettini can't compete regularly, he loses valuable ranking points, and because of that, he also falls down the rankings. Currently, he is ranked 59th in the world, which is far below his career-high sixth place.
The Italian used to be a Top 10 player, but without playing the full schedule, it's difficult for him to challenge for the top spots again. Paradoxically, he will likely move up the rankings after the Cincinnati Open, as he didn't have any points to defend from last year.
However, Berrettini is set to lose some points after the US Open, and could fall out of the Top 60. He will aim to recover in time for the Asian swing, with tournaments in China being a likely target for Berrettini's return.
