Venus Williams will compete at the US Open once again after receiving a wild card for this year's event.
Williams is a living legend, and every time she steps onto the court, she proves that she belongs among the group of players capable of competing at the best WTA events. Despite being currently the 70th highest-ranked American female player, Venus beat American No. 10 Peyton Stearns in Washington recently.
She then also competed at the Cincinnati Open, but lost in two tight sets to Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, 4-6, 4-6. At the moment, Williams relies only on wild cards to enter events, and she received one to compete in the last Grand Slam tournament of the season.
The 2025 US Open will run from August 24th until September 7th, and it will feature the two-time champion competing. Venus Williams first played at the US Open in 1997 when she reached the final. She then reached the semi-finals twice in 1998 and 1999 before winning the tournament in 2000 and 2001.
Since reaching another final in 2002, which she lost to her sister Serena, Venus Williams has not played in another US Open final. However, she has played every time she could, and this year, she will make her 25th appearance at the New York Slam.
But Williams isn't the only American or the only veteran who received the wild card. There were a total of eight players announced for the women's singles and eight for the men's singles.

16 players announced for singles wild cards at the 2025 US Open

In the women's field, young Americans Clervie Ngounoue and Julieta Pareja were among the wild card recipients. Ngounoue is a former junior World No. 1 player, and she will make her second appearance at the US Open. Pareja, on the other hand, is the current junior World No. 1 player.
Caroline Garcia will retire from tennis this year, and she was given one more chance to compete at the US Open, as she, too, received a wild card. She is a former semi-finalist, having reached the final four in 2022.
Caty McNally, Valerie Glozman, Alyssa Ahn, and Talia Gibson were the other four players who received the wild card. Gibson received a reciprocal wild card, which is part of an agreement between Tennis Australia and the USTA.
Plenty of Americans received a wild card for the men's singles as well. Tristan Boyer, Nishesh Basavereddy, Brandon Holt, and Emilio Nava will all get a chance to compete at this year's major at Flushing Meadows.
Stefan Dostanic, Darwin Blanch, Valentin Royer, and Tristan Schoolkate received wild cards as well. Royer's wild card is reciprocal as part of a deal between the USTA and FFT.
Schoolkate, like Gibson in the women's singles, also received a reciprocal wild card thanks to a deal between Tennis Australia and the USTA. In exchange, American players are then able to get a wild card for the Australian Open.
