Nick Kyrgios admitted to assaulting his ex-girlfriend in Australia, however, he was spared a criminal conviction.

The 2022 Australian Open doubles champion described the common assault as an act of "stupidity" and "frustration," as a magistrate in the tennis star's hometown of Canberra did not record a conviction against the 27-year-old.

Due to the low level of seriousness for a common assault, Magistrate Jane Campbell dismissed the charge. Kyrgios had previously experienced severe despair, suicidal thoughts, and insomnia, but a psychologist testified before the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Magistrates Court that his mental health had improved.

Shortly after, Kyrgios released a statement on his social media accounts, which reads:

“I respect today’s ruling and I am grateful to the court for dismissing the charges without conviction. I was not in a good place when this happened and I reacted to a difficult situation in a way I deeply regret. I know it wasn’t OK and I am sincerely sorry for the hurt I caused.”

“Mental health is tough. Life can seem overwhelming. But I have found that getting help and working on myself has allowed me to feel better. I can never thank Costeen, my family and friends enough for supporting me through this process. I now plan to focus on recovering from injury and moving forward in the best way possible.”
