Holger Rune hit back against online abuse from a fan following the double-bounce controversy against Francisco Cerundolo at the 2023 Roland Garros.
During the fiercely contested fourth-round clash between Rune and Cerundolo, the Dane returned a shot to his opponent in the third set after a double bounce, which the chair umpire failed to notice. As a result, Cerundolo stopped play to protest to the umpire but instead, he was punished for halting the rally.
Following the incident, Rune has faced ongoing criticism for unsportsmanlike conduct, and for failing to acknowledge the incident, although the 20-year-old claimed not to have seen the double fault until after the match. In the latest development, one observer took to Twitter to slam Rune for his lack of sportsmanship.
"Back home in Denmark a get your fair play & sportsmanship that you forget, if ever you already have it,"
To continue the exchange, Rune posted a heated reply by commenting on the poster's lack of clarity on the topic. The world number six also questioned why the spectator felt the need to attack him on social media.
"And I really don't understand what you write? You express yourself very bad. And the ugly emojis is you? I guess so,"
"I never understood the need to hate. Why not spend time on what makes you happy,"
Following his marathon victory in five sets against Cerundolo on Monday, Rune now faces an upcoming quarter final clash against world number four Casper Ruud. The Dane has already matched his best-ever performance at a Grand Slam after he also reached this stage of the Roland Garros tournament last season before losing to Ruud in four sets.
When the duo met last time out, there was plenty of tension and drama as the young players battled out for a place in the French Open final four. However, Rune explained that he hopes for a calmer meeting this time around.
