Carlos Alcaraz is smashing his way past everybody in the Croatian coastal city of Umag where he won his maiden trophy last year.
It all kind of started in Umag last year when he defeated compatriot Albert Ramos for his maiden ATP trophy. Since then he's added a couple of them and he's only two matches away from successfully defending his trophy.
His win over left-handed Facundo Bagnis was a great one as he showed the highest level yet in Umag and he needed those reps because he'll face another lefty in the semi-final. Speaking about that, Alcaraz said:
"It's not usual to play against left-handed players, but of course it's preparation for the next round. It's going to be a really tough round. I have nightmares with Italian players, but I'm trying to show my best and I'll try to [reach] the final."
If he wins that semi-final, Alcaraz will move past Stefanos Tsitsipas for a career-high rank of number 4 of the rankings. On that, he said:
"It means a lot to be able to [reach] the No. 4 ranking, to have a chance to do it. It's amazing for me. I think I'm playing really well. I feel really comfortable playing here, a lot of confidence right now."
