Elena Rybakina may not be able to compete in the main draw of the 2022 San Diego Open which is a WTA 500 event held from October 10th until 16th.

The 2022 Wimbledon champion is currently 25th in the WTA Rankings and only Top 20 players qualified directly for the main draw of the 2022 San Diego Open. Elena Rybakina's ranking is directly influenced by the WTA's decision to strip points from the third Grand Slam of the season. The Kazakh also spoke about it, when she said:

“I feel like I'm not a Wimbledon champion. The point situation, we cannot change, but … it's not fair. Many players are paying for these decisions.” said Rybakina ahead of the US Open. “It was always my dream to win Wimbledon and I did not get the winning feeling."

If the points were awarded, Rybakina would be comfortably ranked inside of the Top 5 of the WTA Rankings and therefore qualify for any event on the WTA Tour. But now, she faces a controversial situation when a Grand Slam champion may be forced to play qualifying.
