Novak Djokovic penned an emotional letter for his rival Roger Federer after the Swiss Maestro announced his retirement from professional tennis.
There is only one player on the ATP Tour that Djokovic had to face more times than Federer, and it's Rafael Nadal. Still, the Serbian's rivalry with Federer was spectacular, as the two met a total of 50 times.
Out of those 50 matches, Djokovic won 27, but while history will remember that, it's certainly not something that these two or anyone else will be thinking about at this year's Laver Cup.
Federer will say his last goodbye in London's O2 Arena. Djokovic will accompany him at the event as a teammate. Naturally, the 21-time Grand Slam champion was emotional about Federer's retirement.
"Roger it’s hard to see this day and put into words all that we’ve shared in this sport together. Over a decade of incredible moments and battles to think back on. Your career has set the tone for what it means to achieve excellence and lead with integrity and poise."
Djokovic knows that life in retirement will be even more beautiful for Federer than his time on the tennis courts. As a father himself, the Serbian knows that his rival will now get a chance to enjoy time with his family, which all the players miss so much while on the road.
"It’s an honour to know you on and off court, and for many more years to come. I know that this new chapter will hold amazing things for you, Mirka, the kids, all your loved ones, and Roger fans still have a lot to look forward to."
"From our family to yours, we wish you much joy, health, and prosperity in the future. Looking forward to celebrating your achievements and seeing you in London."
Djokovic will get a chance to say these words to Federer in person as well, as he will be among those attending his farewell Laver Cup as one of the players.
