Daria Saville got one of the two final wild cards at Wimbledon and the Australian player has a pretty good story behind it.

Getting to play at Wimbledon was a very tricky task for Saville who was very diligent and persistent and it paid off in the end. Saville was ranked No.627 in February but her strong play over the course of the season allowed her to return to the top 100.

It was too late for a direct entry into Wimbledon though which presented a huge disappointment for her. She wanted to play at the event but the only way she could was with a wild card. Her husband Luke Saville helped her polish her 2022 resume building a case for why she should get the wild card.

I had zero expectations. In fact, I was on my way to Roehampton to play Qualifying. I didn’t want to brag about my results but I pretty much said that I missed out by only a little bit and would now be inside the cut. I then sent another email saying, ‘I had a good run in Berlin and now I am inside the top 100. Hello? Please?’.

Saville elected not to give up and followed the initial e-mail with another one because she was taught that it never hurts to ask. And it did not. She eventually got a response and got the wild card having to play Viktoriya Tomova in round one.

It was the best news ever. I was jumping around and my coach was like, ‘I guess that is good news’. I was begging for it. I was very surprised when I got it. I was over the moon. It is pretty special to be selected as a wild card. It is amazing. Wimbledon is beautiful. It is a dream tournament.
