The 2023 ASB Classic in Auckland, New Zealand is a WTA 250 level tournament and is set to take place from January 2-8, 2023.
The draw for the event features 32 players, but it doesn't include the defending, Serena Williams, who won in Auckland in 2020 when the tournament last took place. In 2023, the top seed for the tournament is her compatriot Coco Gauff, who is one of the rising stars of the sport and has already achieved great success at a young age.
Gauff will start against the 2022 Wimbledon semifinalist Tatjana Maria in the first round and Xinyu Wang or the 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin will await her in the second if she wins.
The second seed for the tournament is Sloane Stephens, another former Grand Slam champion in the draw. Stephens will play against Rebecca Masarova from Spain in the first round, and she can meet Anna Blinkova or Elisabetta Cocciaretto in the second.
One player to keep an eye on in the draw is Venus Williams, who is making her return to the tour after a lengthy absence as she hasn't played a match since August. Williams, a former world number one and seven-time Grand Slam champion, will face Katie Volynets in the first round.
The 2021 US Open champion and runner-up are also in the draw. Emma Raducanu will begin her season against rising talent Linda Fruhvirtova, and the third-seeded Leylah Fernandez will take on Linda's sister, Brenda Fruhvirtova.
