After dropping in the ATP Rankings in 2022, Alexei Popyrin is ready to restart his career in 2023 and he showed it at the 2023 Adelaide International 1.

The young Australian finished the 2021 season as world no. 61 after winning his first ATP title. However, in 2022, he ended as 120th player and he will want to clim back in 2023.

He started well at the 2023 Adelaide International 1 as he succeeded in the qualifying and he even defeated world no. 6 in the first round of the tournament. He then played against Marcos Giron and in that match, he produced a jaw-dropping point, which he won while lying on the court.

Speaking about his approach after the match, he said: “I learnt so much last year - in my personal life, and also my professional life. I think I’ve matured so, so much and it’s a really big deal for me to just stay grounded,” Popyrin told The Age and Sydney Morning Herald.

“Last year, coming off probably the best year I had on tour, coming off an ATP title, I probably got a little bit of a big head, got a little bit of cockiness, and last year just kind of put me [back] down to earth and kept me grounded."

“It’s honestly just take it one step at a time, learn from my mistakes which happened last year and go with the flow basically, so I’m just really trying to stay focused in the moment.”
