It was a historic moment in the world of tennis when Casper Ruud was announced as the winner of the 2022 Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award.
The award, which has been presented annually since 2004, has been dominated by Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, who have shared the honour 18 times in the past. Federer won the award 13 times, while Nadal took the trophy on five occasions.
But this year, the Norwegian up-and-comer Ruud was able to break the stranglehold of the two all-time greats, much to the delight of tennis fans around the world.
Ruud, who is currently ranked No. 3 in the world, has had a strong season on the ATP Tour, reaching the final at the Australian Open and the US Open. But it's his sportsmanship and graciousness on and off the court that earned him the prestigious award.
Ruud's victory marks a new chapter in the history of the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award, and it's a testament to the young Norwegian's character and class. It will be interesting to see if he can continue this streak and potentially surpass the record of Federer and Nadal in the future.
It's a reminder to all players to always strive to be gracious in victory and defeat, and to always respect the game and their opponents. Congratulations to Casper Ruud on a well-deserved win!
"A big thanks to everyone who voted for me for this year’s ATP Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award," said Ruud. "I feel very, very honoured and happy to win this prize this year. I will try to keep my mood in the right place for next year. Can’t wait to be back on court."
