The 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal has been nominated for the 2023 Laureus Sportsman of the Year Award.

This prestigious awards ceremony recognizes the most outstanding athletes who have made remarkable contributions to their respective sports in the past year. And for the 2023 Sportsman of the Year Award, there's a familiar face on the shortlist - Rafael Nadal. This nomination recognizes his outstanding achievements during the 2022 season.

The nominees are chosen based on their performances over the past year, with 71 members of the Laureus World Sports Academy acting as the ultimate jury on sporting greatness. The awards ceremony is scheduled to take place in the spring of 2023, and winners will be announced in several categories, including Sportsman of the Year.

Nadal's nomination comes after an outstanding 2022 season in which he won two Grand Slam titles, the Australian Open and the French Open, bringing his total Grand Slam wins to 22, more than any other male tennis player in history at the time.

Nadal's performances in 2022 demonstrated his unparalleled mastery of clay courts, which he has long been known for, as well as his ability to compete on hard courts and grass courts.

Nadal faces tough competition in the 2023 Laureus Sportsman of the Year category. Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé, Max Verstappen, Mondo Duplantis, and Steph Curry are all strong contenders.

Messi's long-awaited triumph at the World Cup was a moment of glory that fans had been waiting for. Mbappé's impressive performance as the leading goalscorer at the World Cup also makes him a strong contender. And Verstappen's successful defense of his Formula One world title puts him in the mix.

However, Nadal's career achievements, consistent performance at the highest level, and record-breaking 2022 season make him a strong candidate for the award.
