The incident took place early Monday morning when a gunman approached Norlaila Kyrgios, Nick's mother, demanding the keys to the vehicle.
The terrifying ordeal began around 8:30 am, with the armed assailant menacingly pointing a long-barrelled gun at Norlaila. After handing over the keys, the gunman then inquired about how to operate the Tesla. Kyrgios, who was alerted by his mother, sprung into action, using the Tesla app to track and slow down the vehicle as police pursued the suspect through the streets of Canberra.
Amidst his ongoing recovery from an injury, Kyrgios has had to confront this distressing situation head-on. In an Instagram story, the Australian admitted to having sleepless nights and feeling overwhelmed by the events of the past few days.
"Last couple days has been rough... Haven't slept much and battling a little. Appreciative of all the support."
Australian authorities have since made strides in their investigation into the incident. In a statement released on Thursday, officials confirmed that they had seized a shotgun believed to have been used in the crime, along with two other firearms.
A 32-year-old suspect from Canberra was apprehended and appeared in a Magistrates Court on Tuesday. The accused now faces a litany of charges, including aggravated robbery and driving a stolen motor vehicle. Court documents revealed that the suspect was denied bail.
The harrowing experience has undoubtedly shaken the Kyrgios family. For Nick, the incident comes at a particularly challenging time, as he is already dealing with the physical demands of recovering from an injury.
