Rafael Nadal exited the Australian Open after a loss to Mackenzie McDonald in a match where injury proved costly.

When Nadal attempted to block McDonald's inside-out forehand, he hurt himself, which adversely affected his ability to compete on the court. Ultimately, he failed to do so, and McDonald went on to triumph in the match in three sets.

Yet another grand slam run cut short by injury left his fans wondering whether his body can handle it anymore.

It's a very simple thing: I like what I do. I like playing tennis. I know it's not forever. I like to feel myself competitive. I like to fight for the things that I have been fighting for almost half of my life or even more.

Nadal further echoed his feelings by speaking about the sacrifices you make to compete at the highest level of tennis. Many players spoke about it over the years because it's hard to understand unless you go through it yourself.

And that's it. It's not that complicated to understand, no? When you like do one thing, at the end, sacrifices always make sense, because the "sacrifice" word is not like this. When you do things that you like to do, at the end of the day, it's not a sacrifice. You are doing the things that you want to do. Sacrifice is when you are doing things that you don't want to do, you know.
