Andrey Rublev will try to keep his 2024 Madrid Open run going against Taylor Fritz, who will also try to reach the final
The last time Rublev stood on a tennis court was against Carlos Alcaraz whom he outplayed in the last couple of games to win the match. The Russian hasn't played that well recently but found something great this week at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Madrid, downing the two-time defending champion.
Fritz had a similar trajectory as he also didn't play all too well in recent weeks but found something great this week in Madrid. Now they face each other so let's see what might happen in this match.
Head-to-head:
Fritz has traditionally been a very tough matchup for Rublev, beating him more than once. They have actually played eight times so far, and the American player was able to win five of those.
Their most recent meeting was at the Laver Cup last year, and Fritz won that one. The match before that was in Monte-Carlo, and on the other hand, Rublev won there. That was also the final time they played on clay.
Andrey Rublev | Taylor Fritz | |
---|---|---|
3 | H2H | 5 |
8 | Rank | 13 |
26 | Age | 26 |
19-8 | 2024 W/L | 19-7 |
311-166 | Career W/L | 250-174 |
Prediction:
It's pretty hard to predict this match because both will have chances. The match will be played in the daytime, which may actually benefit the American more. Fritz's baseline game can be quite overwhelming.
The Russian struggled with that often as well with the serve. If it had been at night, it likely would have benefitted Rublev more as it would have been a bit slower.
Rublev played better so far at the event, but he was seemingly not feeling well during his most recent practice, and the matchup may suit Fritz more.
Prediction: Taylor Fritz to win in three sets.
