Novak Djokovic's opinions and his decisions on vaccinations must be respected, according to John McEnroe, who also claimed that he would have got the vaccine if he had been in the Serb's shoes.

It is still unclear whether the 35-year-old will compete in the New York Grand Slam. The Serb is still unvaccinated despite the fact that American law currently mandates that foreign visitors have a double COVID-19 vaccination.

Although vaccination is not a requirement to enter the tournament, the administrators have chosen to abide by government regulations, which will hurt Djokovic's chances of competing in the season-ending Major. Speaking to Marca, McEnroe insisted 'it's a joke:'

"I think it's stupid that they don't let him play. It's the closest thing to a joke. I would have been vaccinated in his place, but you have to respect his way of thinking. We have been living with the pandemic for two and a half years and that they do not allow him to participate, I consider it a joke."

There is some optimism due to a recent CDC update but it doesn't seem likely that the country will change it's policy until the end of the year.
