Denis Shapovalov joined the growing list of players that withdrew from the upcoming 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters.
On Tuesday, Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz, Felix Auger-Aliassime, and Pablo Carreno-Busta all withdrew from the first ATP 1000 clay-court tournament of the season. The 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters will be played from April 9th to 16th and it lost a lot of star power only in a few hours.
Shapovalov played 13 matches in 2023 and he won only six of those. In his most recent appearance, the Canadian lost to Taylor Fritz at the Miami Open, after previously beating Guido Pella in the second round.
Now, it was revealed that Shapovalov won't be competing at the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters and he, therefore, joined also fellow compatriot Felix Auger-Aliassime, with Canada losing two of their best player and the only two that were eligible to compete at the event.
Up next, the 23-year-old will want to focus on two events that will be played in Spain. First, Shapovalov should appear at the 2023 Barcelona Open, and then he should move to Spain's capital for the second ATP 1000 clay-court tournament of the year, the 2023 Madrid Open.
Despite a disappointing upset in his season, Shapovalov will surely want to focus on important things in his life. In a recent interview, he revealed that he relishes every moment even more after he realized how lucky he is to do what he loves.
"I think at the end of the day, first of all if things are not going well, you can have it way worse. I’m fortunate enough to be in the position that I am and trying to be the best possible. But it’s just a sport. It’s just a game. Obviously I want to be better and sometimes I’m frustrated on the court. But I think I do a good job of just not carrying it over because we’re very lucky. I’m living a good life."
