After last playing at the Miami Open, Felix Auger-Aliassime won’t be playing at the Monte-Carlo Masters.
Despite being a long-time resident of the principality, Auger-Aliassime won’t get a chance to play at the first clay-court ATP Masters 1000 event of the season because of a knee problem.
Auger-Aliassime isn’t a stranger to injury woes, as they creep up on him here and there. He’s been healthy for most of this year so far and playing on a really solid level. He hasn’t been stellar, but he managed to get one or two wins each week.
That won’t continue at the Monte-Carlo Masters, as he announced that he won’t be playing because he wants to take some time off to let his knee heal before the season continues.
"Unfortunately I have to announce my retirement from the Monte-Carlo Masters this year. It is an event that I look forward to each year however, I have been struggling with my left knee for the past few weeks and decided it was the smartest decision to take some time off so I’m able to fully heal and recover before my next tournament at the Madrid Open. Thank you as always for your support and I look forward to seeing you back on court soon."
It shouldn't be a long break for Auger-Aliassime, as he promised to be back at the Madrid Open, which is coming up in a few weeks. This decision is him mostly trying to navigate a physical issue to the best of his ability as the season slowly drifts toward the French Open.
That event is the most crucial tournament on the schedule, and he likely wants to stagger his tournaments close to it so that he arrives in Paris in competitive shape and possibly with a lot of confidence after playing decently in the lead-up to it.
Auger-Aliassime joined a growing list of players who withdrew from the Monte-Carlo Masters. Rafael Nadal withdrew from the tournament and a few minutes after that, also Carlos Alcaraz announced his withdrawal as well.
