Rafael Nadal won't be playing at the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters as he's not ready to return to competitive action.
Initially, the 36-year-old appeared on the entry list for the first ATP 1000 clay-court event of the season. After that, the tournament director of the tournament said that Nadal was the first player to sign up and many fans were already looking forward to his come back at the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters.
But soon after that, the 22-time Grand Slam champion denied the claims about the comeback, saying that he still doesn't know if he'll be ready to compete. Now, it's clear that Nadal won't appear in Monte Carlo as he announced his withdrawal.
In the past, Nadal triumphed 11 times at the Monte-Carlo Masters and the event is a special one for him. Therefore, it is not a surprise that the Spaniard was very disappointed to withdraw, as he stated:
"Hi everyone, I'm still not ready to compete at the highest level. I will not be able to play in one of the most important tournaments of my career, Monte Carlo. I am not yet in a position to play with the maximum guarantees and I continue my preparation process, hoping to return soon."
Nadal will now want to prepare for the upcoming Barcelona Open, which is an ATP 500 event, as he's on the entry list for the tournament that he won 12 times in the past.
However, it's clear that this year the Spaniard has mainly one goal and that is to expand his collection of Grand Slam titles and he'll have a great chance to do that at the 2023 Roland Garros, where he wants to be competitive according to his own words.
Only time will tell what the 2023 season holds for Nadal as he still accumulated only 45 ranking points and lost three of the four matches that he played.
