Juan Martin Del Potro wants to play one final time at the
US Open, but a lot will depend on his health and his knee.
Del Potro played his last match at the 2022 Argentina Open in Buenos Aires against Federico Delbonis. It was a send-off among his fans in Argentina, but he could say goodbye to the sport also at the US Open, the only major that he managed to win in his tennis career.
The Argentinian's intent is to try and prepare for the New York Slam with the hope of playing at the event if his knee and body hold up. It's a big if, but Del Potro, who spoke with the
Associated Press, has faith that he can do so, especially if he gives it his all, and it's not the first time that
he's hinting at a return to tennis.
"My goal is to be ready to play an official match in the tournament. I don’t know if I will be 100% or not but, at least, if my last tennis match ever has to be this year, I want (it to be) … at the U.S. Open. I will work hard for the last time, maybe, in my career, and then you never know. God will decide if I’m ready or not."
Del Potro was in New York last year after the organizers invited him and it's a place he loves coming back to. Beating Roger Federer in the final is a memory he could describe to the finest details even today, and that won't change for the rest of his life.
It was then that the organizers extended an invite to him for this year's participation, and tournament director Stacey Allaster would love for him to come back.
"Juan Martín is a true favorite of U.S. Open fans. He is a tremendous, yet gracious, competitor and we would be thrilled for this former U.S. Open champion to join us at this year’s tournament."
