The new ATP Rankings had Daniil Medvedev as the number one but also with fewer than 7000 points which is quite important.

There haven't been many number ones with less than 7000 points and it's best shown by the fact that the last number one to do that was Roger Federer in 2009. It comes after a poor result from Medvedev in Montreal where he was defending 1000 points. He won the event last year by beating Opelka in the final however he got beaten by Nick Kyrgios fairly easily this time around.

It caused him to drop nearly 1000 points bringing his total below 7000 points. He defends 360 points this week and if he exits sooner than the quarterfinal, Rafael Nadal will overtake him as number one with a triumph in Cincinnati.

Holding on to that number one spot will be hard for Medvedev because he's defending 2000 points at the US Open and Nadal has barely any points to defend and can only gain for the rest of the year. Carlos Alcaraz is another one that will be in play for that year-end number one which could be a fascinating battle to watch.
