Jannik Sinner made it to the 2024 US Open final, but unfortunately for him, not in his best health.
The Italian player was battling Jack Draper in an intense semi-final match. Although it ended in three sets, with Sinner winning 7-5, 7-6(3), 6-2, the match featured a moment that no one wanted to see.
Both players struggled physically, but because of different reasons. Draper seemingly had some stomach problem, because of which he even puked on the court at one point.
However, Sinner's problem was even more significant, even though he quickly managed to shake it off. During a rally in the ninth game of the second set, the World No. 1 player fell in an attempt to catch one of the balls from his opponent.
Trying to soften the fall, the 23-year-old naturally put his hands under his body, but it was because of that that he seemingly hurt his left wrist. The Italian player immediately grimaced and requested physio after the game.
His opponent, in the meantime, received instructions from his coach to hit into his opponent's backhand, trying to expose his problem. However, after a short treatment from the physio, Sinner didn't seem to be bothered by the issue at all.
He was able to continue the match and win it in three sets, but after the match, he was seen with his left wrist bandaged in ice, which raised further concerns that he addressed after the match.
"The physio loosened it up very fast on court, so after I felt okay in the beginning. Then after it went away by playing, which is good."
The reigning Australian Open champion knew that how he felt at that moment was not that important, given the fact that he was still hot and had adrenaline in his blood from the match. Therefore, he wanted to see how will his wrist feel the following day.
"Let’s see how it is tomorrow when it’s cold. It’s gonna be a different feeling. Hopefully it is nothing to be concerned about. I’m quite relaxed, because if it’s something bad, you feel it, straightaway a bit more. Yeah, let’s see how it is."
In the final of the 2024 US Open, he will face a player that won't make things easy for him. Taylor Fritz is having a run of his life, reaching his first major final, and with the backing of the crowd, the American player will attempt to stun the World No. 1 player in the final.
"Big serve, very solid player from the back of the court. He can hit strong. He can hit with rotation. He can mix up the game very well. He has played a lot this year, so he has a lot of rhythm of the match."
"We’re in New York playing against an American … It’s normal. It’s like when I play in Italy, so I’m gonna accept that. I have my team and my people who are close to me. In my mind, I know that there are many people watching from home from Italy, and it’s just take some support from them."
