Andy Murray will be playing for Great Britain in the group stage of the 2022 Davis Cup Finals from September 13th until 18th in front of home fans in Glasgow.
Murray will represent his country for the first time since 2019. His last match at the Davis Cup was against the Netherlands three years ago. Murray beat Tallon Griekspoor in a three-set epic, 6-7, 6-4, 6-7.
Now, he will be part of his country's Davis Cup team again. Great Britain's coach, Leon Smith, announced the nomination, which also included Murray's name. That's despite Smith's previous comments, saying that he wouldn't pick the former ATP World No. 1 player just because of his status.
“(It's not just the) problem and difficult decision around who gets to play on each match-day - in the two singles and the doubles - even just picking the squad takes a lot of thought."
"I've got relationships in varying ways with all of the players. I go a long way back with Andy, in particular, but my job is to look at it objectively and to do whatever I can to win."
Murray was naturally happy to be part of the selection. This time, it will be special in Great Britain's colors, as the tie will be played in Glasgow, so in front of the home fans.
"It’s always special playing in a Davis Cup tie in front of a home crowd. Some of the best moments of my career have come representing my country in the Davis Cup, so to be a part of the team again means a lot."
The British No. 1 player, Cameron Norrie, also spoke about the fact that Murray will help the team in Glasgow. He was happy to have such an experienced player in the team.
"Having Andy in the team, of course, is a real boost. Both him and Dan were here in 2015 when we went on to win the competition and having that experience is really important, but it also drives the rest of us to get there as well."
