"I was always struggling with respiratory problem" - Djokovic on what healthy diet helped him with

Before Novak Djokovic started to dominate tennis, he had to undergo some pretty big changes in his daily life to become what he is today.

Besides working for hours on perfecting his craft, Djokovic had to alter his diet to maximize his body's potential as he worked to become the best possible version of himself. In an interview with Graham Basinger in 2020, Djokovic revealed what needed to change for him in order to reach the Mt. Everest of tennis. The reason for the change was a drastic one:

“I was always struggling with respiratory problem, a kind of mild version of asthma and suffocation during the night for many years since I was seven years old. For some reason, you know, as the time was passing by these allergies were gaining more intensity in terms of the reaction I felt. It was just getting stronger and stronger and the place where I felt that the most was always the tennis court."

Changing his diet was the most important thing for him so he and the medical staff worked tirelessly on perfecting a diet that works well for him. If you ever wondered what Djokovic eats in a day, he explained it like this:

“When I rise from the bed I start with warm water and lemon to help my body detoxify. And then I would have celery juice on an empty stomach. Then I’ll take a break and have my green smoothie with different algae and different fruits and superfoods and great supplements that I use that allow me to have mental clarity and feel good."

He continued:

“I eat a lot of fruits for the first part of the day and salads. I don’t like to eat any food that would require too much energy for digestion, especially in the first part of the day because that’s when I need the most energy for my training. So I’m keeping things quite light and I would have grains like quinoa, wild rice, sweet potato and normal potato, like steamed or boiled.”
