The 2025
Cleveland Open, scheduled for August 17th to 23rd, gives players a final opportunity to build momentum before the 2025 US Open, and the
prize money and ranking points for the tournament have been unveiled.
Founded in 2021, the Cleveland Open is among the newest
WTA events. Last year's final between
McCartney Kessler and Beatriz Haddad Maia was one of the most dramatic of 2024.
Kessler unexpectedly secured her maiden title by overcoming the Brazilian 1-6, 6-1, 7-5. The American has since established herself further by winning two more singles titles and the 2025 Canadian Open doubles with
2025 French Open champion Coco Gauff.
Former world No. 2 Anett Kontaveit,
Liudmila Samsonova, and Sara Sorribes Tormo are the other former winners since the tournament started. This year's iteration could be the best yet.
Samsonova, teenage star Maya Joint, surprise French Open semifinalist Lois Boisson, and
Katie Boulter are among the women on the entry list, providing a suitable combination of youth, experience, and powerful hitters.
WTA 250 tournaments like the Cleveland Open do not offer the same rewards as 500-level events. However, players will still attempt to win the most significant share of the $275,094 prize money pot.
This year's Cleveland Open champion will receive $31,565 and 250 points. After significantly boosting her ranking since the 2024 iteration, Kessler is not on this year's entry list, meaning a new winner is guaranteed.
Haddad Maia is also not on the entry list after electing to play at the 2025 Monterrey Open, a WTA 500 tournament held during the same week. The 2023 French Open semifinalist has a chance to win more ranking points and prize money in Mexico.
The 2025 runner-up in Cleveland will earn $18,685 and 163 ranking points. Since the event's founding, Ekaterina Alexandrova, Irina-Camelia Begu, and Aliaksandra Sasnovich have been the other losing finalists.
Last year's semifinals were superb matches. Kessler recovered from losing the opening set to triumph 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 against Anastasia Potapova, and Haddad Maia also needed three sets to overcome Katerina Siniakova.
98 ranking points and $10,410 are on offer for being among the four best players at the 2025 Cleveland Open. No players receive byes at WTA 250 tournaments, meaning everyone in the draw needs to win three matches to progress that far.
The prize money drops below five figures from the quarterfinal stage. Whichever four players are knocked out at that stage will walk away from the tournament with 54 points and $5,925.
Those who fall in the round of 16 are set to collect 30 points and $3,624. One ranking point and $2,585 will be handed to the first-round losers. Awarding a solitary point rather than giving none, as happens at ATP 250 tournaments, seems odd and somewhat pointless.
WTA 250 events sometimes slip under the radar. However, the Cleveland Open has attracted good crowds that have generated impressive atmospheres since its founding. The previous attendances and exciting 2025 entry list mean this year's iteration should be a terrific spectacle.
