A new format of the mixed doubles tournament will make its debut at the 2025
US Open, and the
draw for the event has been revealed.
There has been a lot said about the new format of the mixed doubles tournament since it was announced. Some love it and some hate it. Doubles specialists are mostly those
unhappy with the changes, as there is only one purely doubles pairing.
On the other hand, many tennis fans are happy about the exciting pairings they will get to see, even though the draw is still subject to many possible changes because of the packed schedule and the Cincinnati Open finals.
Jessica Pegula and
Jack Draper are the first-seeded team, and they should take on
Emma Raducanu and
Carlos Alcaraz in the first match. However, that is one of the teams that will likely withdraw. Alcaraz has to play the Cincinnati Open final at 3 p.m. in Cincinnati on Monday, while his first-round match in the mixed doubles event is scheduled at 2 p.m. in New York on Tuesday.
Another team in doubt is Olga Danilovic and
Novak Djokovic. According to the available information, Djokovic was seen practicing in Montenegro during the weekend, and
he appeared with an injury setback. If the all-Serbian team plays their match, they will take on an all-Russian team of
Mirra Andreeva and
Daniil Medvedev.
Probably the most likely pair to withdraw from the tournament is the third-seeded team of
Iga Swiatek and
Casper Ruud. The Polish player will play her final in Cincinnati, even three hours later than Alcaraz, which makes it almost impossible for her to make it to New York in time.
Considering the final takes around 2 hours, including the speeches, it could end at around 9 p.m. The Pole will then have to do her recovery and talk to the press, likely ending her day at around midnight. She would then need to hop on the plane to New York for a two-hour flight. It would likely take another hour to get to the bed, and Swiatek's match is scheduled at 12 p.m. on Tuesday, meaning it's impossible for her to have suitable rest and preparation for her first-round match.
If, however, she somehow makes it, Swiatek and Ruud will take on the home pairing of
Madison Keys and
Frances Tiafoe, who will be one of the dark horses at the event.
Another team at risk of withdrawal is that of the
ATP World No. 1 player,
Jannik Sinner, and doubles
WTA World No. 1,
Katerina Siniakova. The duo should take on
Belinda Bencic and
Alexander Zverev, another team that will likely withdraw. While Sinner has to play the final in Cincinnati, Zverev has been dealing with a physical issue at the event in Cincinnati, and he likely won't want to risk it in New York.
Apart from these teams, there are a few teams that are likely to compete and should put on a great show at the event. The second-seeded team of
Elena Rybakina and
Taylor Fritz will take on the only purely doubles pairing of
Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori.
Rybakina and Fritz won the title at the Eisenhower Cup earlier this year, and already then, they declared their interest in competing for a Grand Slam title together. Now, they will have a chance to do that.
One of the teams that will receive the most support from the home crowd will be the pairing of
Taylor Townsend and
Ben Shelton. In the first round, they will play against another home player,
Amanda Anisimova, and
Holger Rune.
Fans in New York will also have a chance to see a living legend on the court.
Venus Williams will join forces with
Reilly Opelka, taking on
Karolina Muchova and
Andrey Rublev in the first round.
All of these matches will be played in the best-of-three first-to-four games sets, with no-ad format and a 10-point tie-break to decide the third set. The matches will be played on the Arthur Ashe Stadium and the Louis Armstrong Stadium. First and second-round matches will be played on Tuesday, while the semi-finals and the final will take place on Wednesday.
