Carlos Alcaraz wins 2022 Madrid Open after dominant performance against Alexander Zverev

It's back-to-back titles in his home country for Carlos Alcaraz after he defeated Alexander Zverev in the final of the 2022 Madrid Open to lift his second ATP Masters 1000 trophy of the season.

In his quarterfinal match against Rafael Nadal and semifinal against Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz always needed three sets to win and fought on the court for almost 6 hours in total in these two matches. In the final of the 2022 Madrid Open against Alexander Zverev, it was a whole different story for the young Spaniard.

Alexander Zverev really likes to play in Madrid as the German triumphed in 2 out of the last 3 editions of the tournament. He also backed his good form in the Spanish capital by defeating the 2022 Monte-Carlos Masters champion, Stefanos Tsitsipas. However, in the final of the tournament, he faced probably the most difficult opponent on the ATP Tour right now.

Players started the match by comfortably winning their service games, until Alcaraz went on a 10-point winning streak to grab a quick 5-2 lead in the first set. He then held on to the lead and won the first set 6-3 to gain an important advantage in the match.

The home fans were pushing the Spaniard in the match as he was unstoppable in the second set. After losing the first game of the set, he won all the remaining games to eventually win the match 6-3, 6-1 and win his fourth title of the 2022 season after Zverev ended the match with a double fault.

After the tournament, Alcaraz will move to the sixth place of the ATP Rankings, and also to the second place in the ATP Race to Torino where he will be just 80 points behind the first Rafael Nadal, who he will try to overtake already at the Italian Open in Rome.
