Carlos Alcaraz's way of preserving memories is having tattoos on his body to celebrate some of his best moments on a tennis court.
The Spaniard is addicted to permanent ink. Shortly after winning the US Open in 2022, he had a tattoo with the number 11.09.22 inscribed on his left tricep just above his elbow. It signifies the day he won the title in New York, beating Casper Ruud in the final.
It was also after that match that Alcaraz became World No. 1 for the first time - the youngest in ATP history at the age of 19. Aside from spending time with his family after a landmark win, Alcaraz has developed a habit of getting a tattoo as he believes it's the best way to celebrate.
Most recently, on the eve of the main draw action at the Rio Open, where Alcaraz is the top seed, he was pictured with another inscription of body art. The design looks like a strawberry with the numerical 16.07.23, which is inked on his left leg.
It is an important date on which Alcaraz won his second Grand Slam at last year's Wimbledon. He recovered from a set down to beat four-time defending champion Novak Djokovic in five sets in the final. The 20-year-old became the first man born after 1990 to win multiple majors.
The strawberry tattoo is symbolic of the great tradition at the SW19. Strawberries and cream have been a popular snack eaten by spectators and players alike since the early 20th century at the grass-court slam. Incidentally, the Wimbledon women's champion, Marketa Vondrousova, also has the same tattoo on her right shoulder.
Alcaraz will be looking to end her title drought at this week's Rio Open in Brazil. His Wimbledon success last July remains the last time he won a tournament. His last podium finish was in Cincinnati when he finished runner-up to Djokovic.
