The draw for the 2024 Canadian Open has been revealed, and it promises an exciting week of action in Montreal.
The Canadian Open, also called the National Bank Open, is a unique ATP Masters 1000 tournament, as it alters between two cities. Every odd year it's held in Toronto, and then every even year the tournament is played in Montreal, which applies to this year.
Last year, Jannik Sinner lifted the trophy in Toronto, but this year, he won't get to defend it in the same city, as the 2024 Canadian Open will run in Montreal from August 6th to 12th, and the Italian will be the top seed in the draw.
Sinner was forced to withdraw from the 2024 Paris Olympics, but that may prove to be a blessing in disguise for him. The reason is simple, he got more time to prepare for the hard-court part of the season, and didn't have to switch back to clay like most of his rivals.
On the other hand, his top two rivals, Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic, will contest the final at the 2024 Paris Olympics, and as a result, they withdrew from the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Montreal, making the path to defending the title so much easier for the World No. 1 player.
As every player among the top eight seeds, the 22-year-old has a first-round BYE, and in the second round of the tournament, he will start against either one of the qualifiers or Pedro Martinez from Spain.
On the other side of the draw is the second-seeded Alexander Zverev. The German played at the Olympic Games, which ended in disappointment for him, and he will try to forget that in Montreal, but the draw was brutal to him.
The 2021 Tokyo Olympics champion will start in the second round, taking on the winner of the match between Jordan Thompson from Australia and extremely talented Jack Draper from the United Kingdom, who is one of the highest-ranked unseeded players in the draw.
Among the favorites in Montreal will be the eighth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas, but he will also have to deal with a challenging draw, starting in the second round against either Kei Nishikori or Alex Michelsen.
There are no easy draws at the ATP Masters 1000 tournaments, and the 13th-seeded Holger Rune learned it the hard way, drawing home wild card Milos Raonic in the first round of the tournament.
Another first-round blockbuster will see the 11th-seeded Ben Shelton clash with Alexander Bublik, as the draw for the 2024 Canadian Open, which can be seen below, offers many great matchups.
