Novak Djokovic survived an inspired level from his first-round opponent, 19-year-old Nishesh Basavareddy, at the 2025 Australian Open.
The Serbian player didn't enter the first Grand Slam tournament of the season as the top favorite, but with his incredible experience and 10 titles in Melbourne, he should never be underestimated.
His first-round opponent could certainly test his qualities, as 19-year-old Basavareddy has been on fire. He came to Melbourne after playing in the semi-finals of the ASB Classic in Auckland.
The American player also had a good start in this match, as he was the first player to break. He went from 2-3 down in the first set to lead 5-3, also thanks to saving two break points along the way.
When serving for the set, Basavareddy saved another break point, stunningly winning the first set against Djokovic 6-4. The 24-time major winner needed a response, and he needed it quickly.
But it was not coming at the start of the second set. However, trailing 3-4, Basavareddy couldn't handle the pressure, as he lost a 40-15 lead on his serve. Djokovic used the break point he worked his way to, eventually winning the second set 6-3.
At the end of the set, Basavareddy started struggling with cramps, and from there, it was a one-man show. Show of a man who took care of so many spectacles inside of the Rod Laver Arena.
Djokovic started the third set by breaking his opponent's serve and then easily cruising to a 6-4 win, not facing a single break point throughout the set. In the fourth set, he was even more comfortable.
The 37-year-old Serbian player eventually won the match easily, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 in almost three hours, reaching the second round of the 2025 Australian Open. His next opponent will be a qualifier from Portugal, Jaime Faria.
Speaking during his on-court interview after the match, Djokovic had nothing but words of praise for his 19-year-old opponent, who played probably the biggest match of his life.
"He was a better player for a set and a half. He deserved every bit of applause he got when he left the court. To be honest I’ve never seen him play up until three or four days ago. I didn’t know much about him."
"These matchups are always tricky when you play someone with nothing to lose. First match ever for him in a slam. He pleasantly surprised me with all of his shots and fighting spirit towards the end. I wish him all the best for the rest of his career."
While for Basavareddy, it was the first time playing against the 24-time Grand Slam champion at the Rod Laver Arena, for Djokovic, it was the first time with Andy Murray in his coaching box, and he spoke about the experience afterward.
"It was a bit of a strange experience to have him court side in my box. We played for over 20 years against each other at the highest level. Great to have him on the same side of the net. He gave me great advice mid match."
"It’s good we have an opportunity now to have allowed coaching on the same side. It’s a completely different angle when you’re watching from the side. He’s been doing really well. It’s been an enjoyable experience. Hopefully we don’t stop here."
