After finishing the 2021 season as world number 3, Garbine Muguruza didn't have the best year so far.
The 28-years-old Spanish player won only 9 matches this year and added 14 losses throughout the season. In the WTA Race, which counts the ranking points only for the ongoing season, Garbine Muguruza is ranked as world no. 54 with only 693 points. However, she's still world number 9 in a classic 52-week WTA Rankings.
Last year, Garbine Muguruza won 39 out of 55 matches she played and she lifted three trophies - in Dubai, Chicago and also the WTA Finals in Guadalajara. She also played the fourth round at the US Open and the majority of her points came at the end of the season.
The WTA event in Chicago was held in September and WTA Finals is traditionally a year-end event. That means that in the upcoming months, Muguruza needs to defend 240 points from the US Open, 470 points from Chicago and 1250 points from the WTA Finals.
Currently, it seems that she won't qualify for the year-end event and therefore, former world number 1 and 2-time Grand Slam champion can drop out of Top 50 in the WTA Rankings despite still being a Top 10 member on the 22nd of August 2022.
