Coco Gauff is officially the No. 1 doubles player in the world, and she reacted hilariously to the news afterward.
Gauff is best known for her singles career. She made her breakthrough on the singles court three years ago at the 2019 Wimbledon Championships as a 15-year-old, beating Venus Williams on her way to the fourth round.
However, the American has been a capable doubles player since the start of her career on the WTA Tour. Her first WTA title came just a month after her Wimbledon breakthrough at the Citi Open in Washington alongside her partner at the time, Caty McNally.
She also reached last year's US Open women's doubles final alongside McNally. They lost a tight three-set final to Samantha Stosur and Shuai Zhang, much to the home fans' disappointment.
Gauff began playing doubles with Jessica Pegula this season. She won the first WTA 1000 title of her career alongside Pegula at the Dubai Tennis Championships in February. They also reached the French Open final.
The American duo reached another final at the Canadian Open and secured the title in Toronto after a tough battle against Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Ellen Perez. Gauff and Pegula squandered five match points in the second set but recovered to win 6-4, 6-7, 10-5.
That run to the title means Gauff is the world's No. 1 doubles player. She seemed shocked by the news afterward, delivering a hilarious comment when she realized she was at the top of the rankings.
"Oh my god number one in something. I was like, I hope I didn't cheat."
It is a great achievement and reward for the teenager deciding to take both singles and doubles seriously. Gauff could become a No. 1 singles and doubles player one day. She has a long career ahead of her that will surely be filled with further successes.
