Coco Gauff is set to become the new doubles World No. 1 player after winning the title at the Canadian Open in Toronto with Jessica Pegula.
The 18-year-old sensation is having a great year. She's not shining just on the singles court but also in doubles. After playing the 2022 Roland Garros final with Jessica Pegula, the pairing lifted the trophy at the WTA 1000 event in Toronto, and both will make a major move in the WTA Rankings.
The American duo faced Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Ellen Perez in their final match and they didn't start well. Their opponents led 3-0 with two breaks early in the first set, but Gauff and Pegula fought back.
They managed to break their opponents' serve three times in the opening set and win six out of the remaining seven games played in the first set to win it 6-4.
In the second set, Gauff and Pegula had five match points, but they couldn't use any of them, and eventually, Melichar-Martinez and Perez won the set in a tie-break.
Yet, Gauff and Pegula managed to stay calm in the super tie-break and won it 10-5. Thanks to the win, they lifted the trophy at the Canadian Open, and both also added valuable ranking points.
As champions, both Gauff and Pegula will earn 900 WTA ranking points for their doubles ranking. That guarantees Gauff to become the new World No. 1 player.
Pegula will make a major move. Previously, her career-high was the 12th place and now, she will move to the World No. 8 position.
Gauff will have a total of 5,945 points, which will be enough to overtake second Shuai Zhang. On the other hand, Elise Mertens, who was the World No. 1 player during the Canadian Open, will drop to the World No. 4 position with 5.580 points to her name.
