Over a dozen WTA Tour players and two dozen amateurs came together to participate in a charity pro-am for Tennis Plays for Peace ahead of the 2023 Charleston Open.
The event was hosted by Elina Svitolina, who is making a comeback to tennis after more than a year. She was accompanied by fellow Ukrainian Ahelina Kalinina, 2017 US Open champion Sloane Stephens, and Charleston native Shelby Rogers.
I’m really thankful to all the players and the tournament to make this happen. It’s really important to continue helping the Ukrainian people. This is really special that we can help in many different ways.
This is the second year in a row that the event has hosted a charity fundraiser for Ukranie and this year's pro-am raised $100,000 as part of the Tennis Plays for Peace programme.
It’s so great to see everyone coming together to support my home of Ukraine. Events like these are so important to keep Ukraine top of mind, and we appreciate the help of the community here. Thank you to the Credit One Charleston Open for organizing.
Tournament director Bob Moran also spoke at the event underlining how the Charleston Open is very keen to help with such matters. He said it's important for the player's taking part as well as the event itself.
Increasing awareness and raising funds for Ukraine is very important to us as a tournament and to our players. We are passionate about working with Elina, who has a deep and personal understanding of the needs in her home country right now.
